Calculated Risks; How Solar Salesman Tuten Learned to Just Go For It

Solar panel salesman Marshall Tuten knew from a young age what monotony felt like. “I grew up in a traditional family with humble roots. My parents taught me to save money, to get a good education, and to be frugal.” A pretty standard upbringing. But Tuten was unable to connect well with others, until a chance opportunity changed his life forever. “ Throughout school I lacked confidence, friends, and belonging, but found myself in an opportunity after highschool that put me in a large latin-american community in the United States where I did community service and led large teams. There I learned how to speak spanish and have fluently spoken ever since 2014. I consider it my absolute biggest asset aside from my discipline and capacity to empathize.”

Solar panel sales, while profitable, has been a risky business where one can get lost amongst the competition. But no one knows that better than Marshall, who decided to dive into the industry the same day he graduated from college. “What pushed me to start my business was the exhilaration and possibility of being surrounded by a winning team doing meaningful work. I discovered far too late in life that taking risks is the only thing that gets you anywhere interesting. I now know that, for the most part, school punishes failure, but life rewards it.”

Despite being such a positive result, one has to wonder how Marshall got into the industry in the first place. Tuten acknowledges calculated risk in everything he does, including his mindset about business ownership and the difficult first steps entrepreneurs must take. “If you’re starting a business, the first step of getting yourself moving. So,assuming you’re already past that point, the biggest challenge is certainly ​finding the right partners and team members to build and scale your business with.​ No matter the industry, strong leaders ​must find people to have on their team to take massive action, inspire, innovate, and build a strong foundation for the future. And spending time with the wrong people can never be done over.”

Tuten’s passion for his industry will spread like wildfire, as will his understanding of how to deal with others. “I’m no business guru, and there are many who claim to be. Not everybody who has something to say is worth listening to. Be careful with whom you spend your time and energy on.
