For most of modern academic history, the doctorate has been built around an act of narrowing. A researcher selects a discipline, enters one of its specialised areas and spends years examining a question with increasing precision. The model has produced extraordinary advances in science, medicine, technology, law and the humanities. It has also helped create a university system in which knowledge is divided into departments, faculties, journals and professional identities.

The world outside the university is less orderly.

Artificial intelligence is a computational achievement, but its consequences extend into psychology, employment, ethics, communication and law. Public-health interventions depend on medical evidence, yet their success may be determined by trust, culture, education and political behaviour. Climate research requires environmental science, but climate action also involves economics, technology, public policy, design and collective decision-making.

The questions are connected even when the institutions studying them are not.

Walfer School of Arts and Sciences, Switzerland, is now seeking to address that divide through a research framework supporting multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary inquiry across selected Master’s programs, PhD pathways and other forms of doctoral research. The announcement represents a further stage in the development of the Zug-based school, which was established on July 7, 2017, with an educational orientation connecting the arts, sciences and professional fields.

The framework is intended to create space for research questions that cannot be investigated adequately from within one academic tradition. Rather than beginning exclusively with a department and requiring the question to conform to it, the Walfer School model begins with the problem and asks which forms of knowledge are required to understand it.

That distinction may sound procedural. It is also philosophical.

Universities have long celebrated innovation while organising research through structures designed to preserve disciplinary continuity. Those structures serve an important purpose. They protect standards, establish methods and prevent complex scholarship from becoming intellectually vague. But they can also leave certain research questions stranded between departments.

A researcher examining human trust in artificial intelligence may require computer science, psychology, behavioural economics, communication and ethics. The project may be considered too psychological for a conventional computing department, too technical for a psychology department and too empirical for a department concerned primarily with philosophy or law.

The question does not become less important because it lacks an obvious institutional address.

Several of the world’s leading universities have recognised this difficulty. In Switzerland, ETH Zurich and EPFL support PhD and doctoral research connecting fields such as learning, cognition, computation, engineering, biology and data science. Their joint work in learning sciences reflects an understanding that education in a technological society cannot be studied through psychology, pedagogy or computer science alone.

In the United States, Stanford University has developed Master’s and doctoral environments connecting environmental science, engineering, medicine, social science and public policy. In Britain, the University of Oxford operates doctoral training structures that bring PhD and DPhil researchers together across mathematical, computational, physical, biological, medical and environmental sciences. Universities and research networks across continental Europe have similarly invested in postgraduate programs that connect academic research with industry, government, professional practice and community knowledge.

These initiatives have helped move postgraduate education beyond the assumption that disciplinary depth and intellectual integration are opposites. Yet many remain organised around predetermined fields such as systems biology, learning sciences, environmental studies, biomedical engineering or regenerative medicine. The institution first defines the academic intersection; the researcher then enters it.

Walfer School of Arts and Sciences, Switzerland, is proposing a more open orientation. Its framework distinguishes among three different ways in which knowledge may be brought together, depending on the nature of the research question.

In multidisciplinary research, several disciplines investigate the same problem while retaining their separate methods. A study of artificial intelligence in healthcare might include an evaluation of technical accuracy by computer scientists, an assessment of clinical value by medical researchers, an examination of trust by psychologists and an analysis of liability by legal scholars. The disciplines contribute to a shared subject, but their work remains largely independent.

In interdisciplinary research, the relationship becomes more integrated. Researchers combine concepts, evidence and methods within one research design. A project examining trust in medical artificial intelligence might connect psychological experiments with clinical data, technical system performance and ethical analysis. Each field begins to influence the way the others define and measure the problem.

Transdisciplinary research moves further. It may cross the established boundaries of academic disciplines to create a new model or method. It may also involve practitioners, institutions, policymakers and communities directly affected by the research.

A transdisciplinary study of workplace well-being, for example, might bring together psychologists, economists, public-health researchers, employers, employees and clinicians. Its objective would not merely be to collect their different perspectives, but to develop and test a new model of organisational health that belongs fully to none of the original fields.

This progression—from multiple perspectives, to integrated methods, to the creation of a new intellectual framework—forms the centre of Walfer School’s proposed contribution to Master’s-level research, PhD study and doctoral inquiry.

The approach does not reject specialisation. Most serious research will continue to require deep expertise within established disciplines. A physicist cannot replace technical knowledge with general curiosity, and a psychologist cannot treat computer science as a collection of convenient metaphors. Breadth without mastery can become little more than academic decoration.

The challenge is therefore not to dissolve the disciplines, but to recognise their limits.

Computer science can determine whether an algorithm is accurate and efficient. It cannot independently determine whether people will trust the system, whether its decisions are lawful or how it may alter human behaviour. Psychology can examine cognition and decision-making, but it cannot by itself explain the architecture of the technology influencing those decisions. Economics can model incentives and outcomes, yet it may not fully describe dignity, fear, identity or cultural resistance.

Each discipline reveals part of reality. Scientific understanding becomes restricted when one part is mistaken for the whole.

Under the Walfer School framework, a researcher in a Master’s program, PhD pathway or other doctoral-level project would be expected to begin with a precise scientific, professional or societal question, identify a principal area of inquiry and explain why additional disciplines are necessary. The researcher would also need to demonstrate how the evidence and methods of those fields relate to one another.

A thesis connecting psychology, artificial intelligence and law could not simply devote one section to each subject. It would need to show why psychological evidence, technical analysis and legal reasoning are inseparable from the central research question.

The number of disciplines in a thesis title would be irrelevant. The quality of their integration would be decisive.

Since 2017, Walfer School of Arts and Sciences, Switzerland, has been developing an academic identity around the meeting of scientific, behavioural, technological, creative and professional knowledge. Its framework gives that orientation a more defined purpose: to provide an academic home for rigorous postgraduate and doctoral questions that may otherwise remain at the margins of conventional departmental structures.

That ambition brings significant responsibilities. An open research framework must not become an undefined one. Credibility will depend on qualified supervision, transparent research standards, ethical governance, appropriate methodology, independent examination and clarity about the standing of every Master’s, PhD and doctoral pathway.

Walfer School’s contribution will ultimately be judged not by the boldness of its language, but by the quality of the scholarship it supports.

The history of the university is, in part, the history of dividing knowledge so that it could be studied deeply. That division produced disciplines of remarkable power and precision. The next stage of scientific development may require universities to become equally skilled at reconnecting what they once separated.

Multidisciplinary research allows several fields to observe the same problem. Interdisciplinary research allows their methods and evidence to interact. Transdisciplinary research asks whether that encounter can produce something genuinely new.

Walfer School of Arts and Sciences, Switzerland, is building its Master’s, PhD and doctoral research vision around all three. Its central proposition is quietly radical: an important question should not be abandoned simply because no traditional department can claim it completely.

Sometimes science advances by going deeper into a single field. Sometimes it advances when separate fields finally begin speaking to one another. And sometimes, at the edge of discovery, the existing categories are no longer enough.
